Our Mission
Our mission is to provide a two-fold wrestling
program. We hope to introduce more children to the sport of wrestling and teach them the fundamentals through challenging
workouts as well as plenty of games and play times. We also strive to keep our wrestlers for the long haul - we hope to see
them as high school standouts and collegiate All Americans. This is done by focusing on fun and fundamentals at the youth
level.
We also offer a more fast-paced program for those wrestlers with several years experience who are more serious
about the sport. Two to three nights a week, we hold practices for this group only, going over harder moves and creating more
challenging workouts to help build better wrestlers. In addition, this year, we hope to host several competitive dual meets and
compete at a team level at several open tournaments to offer competitive matches and help fine-tune our wrestlers before the
final tournaments.
We also wish to strengthen the Medina Wrestling Program by teaching our wrestlers strong basics,
challenging them with innovative moves and combinations and giving them a taste of success to keep them coming back!
We
discourage weight cutting at this level, as our athletes, should they begin wrestling in 1st grade, hopefully have a 16+ year
career as a wrestler ahead of them. Would anybody like to diet for 16 years?!?! Nope!!
Our History
Youth wrestling began in Medina 13
years ago with the Raiders, a product of the hard work and dedication of Rick and Tracy Wasmer. Hundreds of boys and several
state place-winners later, in early 2001, with their youngest son approaching high school, the Wasmer's were ready to direct
their support at that level. Needing a new head coach, Mr. Wasmer approached Coach Ken Arend with the idea of turning the
program over. Immediately, Coach Ken met with several dedicated Medina wrestling families, a Board of Directors was created
and "Medina Youth Wrestling" was formed...
